Ward One Issues

Ward One’s future depends on how we adapt to the pressures of growth, infrastructure, technological disruption and complex community needs.

Working together, we can preserve what we love and create what we need.

The next term of Council will bring challenges and opportunities. I’m asking for your support to add my Ward One voice to advocate on your behalf.

① Rethinking Growth

Ward One is part of the overall population growth collapse that is shifting the entire GTHA. With the advent of dropping immigration numbers, the ongoing condo crash in the real estate marked and growing numbers of domestic migration to other parts of Canada, it’s time for a closer look at the future.

  • We need updated statistics and factual data.

  • We need the latest findings from experts on long-term population, housing, employment, and land-needs growth analyses.

  • We need to know more on how to plan for residential intensification, housing market needs and employment land.

It’s time to re-examine growth allocations, and growth management policies within the context of current provincial planning, regional growth trends, and local drivers of growth across our area.

② Housing

Support new approaches to affordable housing that respond to the needs a variety of family units - single, multi-generational, etc.

Make planning more predictable. A Community Planning Permit System establishes clear rules with community input upfront. It can reduce approval delays and costs, while potentially tempering speculative expectations about what can be built.

Encourage efficient construction. Prefabricated and mass-timber construction, where suitable, can shorten timelines, reduce environmental impacts and potentially lower costs.

More Innovative Housing Options

Take advantage of Oakville’s ‘renoviction’ by-law to continue to protect the rental options already available to residents while exploring additional, new solutions.

Preserve Existing Rental Options

③ Community

Investing in Our Community

  • Advance the Streetscape Plan

  • Advance the Bronte Waterfront Strategy and shape a stronger, more connected waterfront

  • Prioritize a skating loop, enhanced green spaces and trail connections.

  • Let’s bring a Library to Ward One - we are the only ward in Oakville without one! It will serve as a hub for gathering, learning, creating and connecting.

➃ Transportation

  • Work alongside our Regional partner to expand the optimization of traffic signals.

  • Reduce the impacts of construction through enforceable management.

Advocate for Better Traffic Movement

  • Request consideration for a pilot program expansion of the Ward One “Ride on Demand” program currently in operation in Palermo/West Bronte into southern neighbourhoods to support commuter travel to Bronte GO.

  • Advocate to advance the possibility of extending Ride On-Demand services to key industrial zones during off-peak hours to accommodate customers who need to travel to or from these areas outside of the existing fixed route service hours - including Wyecroft Road, North Service Road, Speers Road between Bronte and Third Line, etc. to improve connectivity and help to support shift workers’ needs.

Improve Transit & Active Transportation

➄ Public Safety

Community Safety

  • Work in tandem with our Regional representatives and police to advance the flow of information for residents using tools such as Neighbourhood Safety Audits, expansion of Community Watch programs and regular, quarterly “Let’s Talk Ward One” meetings throughout the Ward.

Calmer Streets

  • Advocate for stronger enforcement against illegally modified exhausts and unnecessary noise. Work with Town Staff and fellow Councillors to lobby the province to enable automated noise enforcement.

  • Work with Town Staff to identify ‘safety hot spots’ in areas like Bronte Village that threaten pedestrians and cause added problems for business owners.

  • Advocate for additional traffic safety measures in neighbourhoods experiencing speeding/dangerous driving. Measures such as curb extensions that shorten crossing distances, lane shifts and, where appropriate, speed cushions can all be considerations. The Marine Drive project is an opportunity to improve safety and learn what works for our community.

Responsible E-Scooter Regulation

  • Support clear and practical regulation of e-scooters and create additional opportunities to education for residents.

➅ Community Life

  • Expand the local farmer’s market, support small businesses, seasonal events, and neighbourhood initiatives. Increase parking supply in Bronte Village.

Vibrancy

Support Local Businesses

  • Help create an environment where small businesses can continue to contribute to the character and economy of Ward 1.

  • Support seasonal events and neighbourhood initiatives that bring residents together.

Grow Community Events

Increase parking supply to better support residents, visitors, and local businesses.
